My sister-in-law asked to announce her pregnancy at my birthday party – so I canceled

A woman has taken to Reddit to vent after her brother and SIL planned to announce their pregnancy at her milestone birthday party.

The nearly 30-year-old said she ended up canceling the event after her brother asked if they could make the announcement at the bash.

Now, they are furious with her for reacting the way she did and told her she was ‘overreacting’.

“Easier to tell them”

“This afternoon, my brother and SIL called to tell me they were pregnant. I was ecstatic for them and asked them all the usual questions,” she explained.

“Then they asked me if I would be okay with them telling my parents at the birthday dinner tonight. They said my SIL had been very ill which I felt and wouldn’t drink so it would be easier to tell them. But if I said no, then they’d tell them at another event (it’s about them) in a few weeks.”

She then told the couple that she would rather they stop the announcement.

“Significant cancellation fee”

“They were well understood”, writes OP. “But when I said I felt I had been put in a difficult spot and shouldn’t have asked in the first place, they were defensive and angry.

“They hinted that I should feel grateful that they were thoughtful enough to ask me in the first place. My SIL yelled at me a bit. The call ended badly and I was more upset than I was at first.

“It put me in a really bad mood and trying to pretend I was upbeat during dinner with them wasn’t appealing, so I contacted my parents to postpone the dinner. They wanted to know why, which I couldn’t tell them, and informed me that there would be a substantial cancellation fee. They were frustrated because I wouldn’t tell them why I was upset. I said I would call the restaurant and fix it, which I did.”

“Ehhh, they asked beforehand, no harm, no foul. They accepted your decision, but you made a big deal out of it when it wasn’t. Literally nothing. We always say, what’s the harm in asking, the worst they can say is no. Is it so hard to say no so intensely that you let this question ruin your birthday? YOURS,” one person told him.

“ESH”, someone else wrote. “Your brother and sister-in-law shouldn’t have blown you off when you said their request upset you. BUT they asked you first and seemed ok with the notice being delayed. You look like you’re 12, you’re not coming for 30. It’s a meal, who cares? The birthday princess thing is for twins.”

“NTA. BIL & SIL could have waited and not said anything to OP or the rest of the family for another day or two,” concluded a third.
